We want to gather food to support North Dallas Shared Ministries (NDSM), a vital component of our charitable mission. Food is an essential resource NDSM provides to our community on our behalf.
However, the demand for food has skyrocketed—NDSM now feeds an average of 133 households four days a week and 145 seniors on Fridays. At the same time, demand jumped post-COVID, and so did grocery prices. This double whammy hit not just NDSM but also the North Texas Food Bank, where we previously purchased a majority of our food items. We now spend five times as much on food to meet our current needs.
While food drives are wonderful and appreciated, we’re initiating a “Gleaning” initiative to see if regular, small donations can provide meaningful support to the Food Pantry.
To see if many small sacrifices will make a difference, we'd like our congregation to join their Gleaning Initiative. (Glean – to collect gradually and bit by bit.)
It is simple:
- Our members put an extra non-perishable item or two in their cart at the grocery store.
- Our members bring their items to services on the weekend.
- We collect the donations and deliver them to NDSM.
- NDSM distributes to those who need them.
Our participation, along with some 40 other congregations, will go a long way to keeping this important assistance flowing to those who need it.
